Accessibility

The Basic Skills Agency takes accessibility seriously and we are good listeners. If you have any problems using this website, or any comments on its accessibility, please contact us.

Background Colour

If you experience visual perceptual problems you may wish to change the background colour of pages. It should be noted that this method, although effective for some users, provides only a partial solution to a need for colour overlay, and in some cases it may be necessary to contact your Special Education Needs (SEN) advisor or eyecare practitioner for further advice.

To change background colours in Internet Explorer 6 and 7:

  • Click the Tools menu and select Internet Options
  • Select the General tab and click the Accessibility button
  • Select the box next to Ignore colors specified by web pages and click OK
  • Click Colors (a menu of colours should appear). Select your preferred background colour and click OK.
  • Select the Accessibility option. (4 tick boxes will appear). Tick the three boxes listed under the Formatting heading and click OK
  • Click OK to confirm the new settings.

Adobe PDFs

To read PDF documents with a screen reader please visit Adobe's accessibility resource centre which provides useful tools and resources. Adobe also has a free online tool to convert PDF documents into HTML.

Style Sheets

We have tried to make sure that you can gain a good experience on every page in this site with style sheets turned off.

Text Size

We have provided buttons on every page throughout the site that help you to increase and decrease the size of the text more easily. The buttons each have a capital A.

As well as using the buttons at the top of the page you can change the text size further by adjusting one of the settings in your browser:

  • Click View in the toolbar along the top
  • Select Text Size, then select the size you want
  • The size of the text on the screen will then change. To re-set this, follow the same procedure and select a new size.

You can also change the screen resolution on your computer to increase text size:

  • Click Start, Settings and Control Panel
  • Double click on the Display icon and select the Settings tab
  • In the Screen area section reduce the screen resolution to 800x600 to increase the size of the text
  • Click Apply, OK and Yes to confirm the new settings.
