Learning with Grandparents

Learning with Grandparents aims to raise standards of basic skills amongst children aged 4-11 by involving grandparents in supporting their grandchildren's learning.

There are currently around 13 million grandparents in the UK. In the past two generations, the number of children cared for by grandparents has jumped from 33% to 82% - with more than a third of grandparents spending the equivalent of three days a week caring for their grandchildren.

The campaign, launched during Grandparent's Week 2006, aims to:

  • Show schools how they can support grandparents in assisting their grandchildren with learning
  • Encourage grandparents to actively support their grandchildren's learning - whether they are spending a lot of time together or a little.
