Many Right Answers

Many Right Answers seeks to:

  • Address the use of speaking and listening in mathematics
  • Meet the learning needs of low-attaining students.

The Resource

Many Right Answers provides a focus on speaking and listening as an effective tool for learning maths.

Share the journeys of six maths teachers as they explore their beliefs, experiment in their classrooms and come back together to reflect. This booklet and DVD (which has the support of maths teaching academics, the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) and the Secondary National Strategy) explores the complexity of teaching and learning and of speaking and listening. It portrays and recognises that teachers are highly trained and reflective professionals and encourages teachers to try out new things inspired by discussion with other practitioners.

With additional comments from Professor Celia Hoyles OBE, this booklet and DVD provide support for trying out new ideas and building expertise over time, using the existing - and fine - practice currently out there.

This resource can be used as a tool for Continuous Professional Development and from here you can download:

  • the 'Learning journal'
  • 'Questions and prompts', to kick-start discussions in maths departments
  • 'Ideas from research and theories' - this was sent to all the participating teachers
  • an electronic copy of our flyer - Local Authority consultants might find this useful.
